Vernon Suydam Gill, Esq. (1942 – 2024). passed away on December 13, 2024 in Washington DC. Vernon was born on January 5, 1942 and grew up in Washington, DC. He was part of the plaintiff class for Bolling v. Sharpe, the DC companion case to Brown v. Board of Education and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School (1959), Howard University (1963), and Howard University School of Law (1966). He was a member of the DC Bar Association and the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. He was known for his razor-sharp intellect, quick wit, love for all-things DC, and dedication to education. During his illustrious legal and military career, he served in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps, in the District of Columbia National Guard, as General Counsel for the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, as Inspector General for the District of Columbia (1985 – 1991), and as a professor at UDC David A Clarke School of Law.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Gill; his children, Patricia Gill, James and Melinda Purce; his cousins, DeVerne and Leonard Taylor; his niece and nephew, De Vida and Vaughn Gill; his grandchildren, Aaliyah Gill, James(Katrina) and Margaret Purce; and his great grandchildren, Melody and Cade Purce. He was preceded in death by his mother, Deon Gill; his mother-in-law Mary Blanton; his son, Vernon Joseph Gill; and his brother, Russell Vaughn Gill.
