With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Terry Evander Barnes, who transitioned to Glory on October 15, 2024, at home after a brief yet valiant battle with aggressive cancer. Born on March 24, 1959, in Whiteville, NC, to Clarence R. Barnes, Jr. and Mattie Louise McNeill Barnes, Terry was a beloved son, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to family.
Terry grew up in church and gave his life his to the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. Like many, he spent some years living life own way, but in his early 40s, he re-dedicated his life to the Lord and grew to become a mighty man of God. As a respected member and Deacon at Crossover Church, he served faithfully in various ministries, including drama, ushers, tutoring, parking, and security. Alongside his wife, Lillian, he led as Head Deacon for many years, helping to guide the church through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Terry’s radiant smile, always present as he greeted members leaving service, and his passionate recruitment of men to serve in ministry, will be forever cherished.
A 1977 graduate of Whiteville High School, Terry was a standout on the basketball team and formed lifelong friendships, some dating back to before kindergarten. He remained connected to his Whiteville roots, returning frequently for reunions and gatherings.
After high school, Terry attended Howard University, pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. It was at Howard that he met his beloved Lillian Loman. They married in May 1981 and attended their graduation ceremony with their two-month-old son in May 1982. Though the early years of marriage were challenging, they overcame adversity through prayer, counseling, and steadfast faith. Their love blossomed and their marriage grew stronger. They enjoyed their empty nest years traveling, hand-dancing, and attending jazz cruises and festivals. Working from home together during the COVID pandemic, they truly enjoyed each other’s company and took on special "pandemic projects" that made their home an even more inviting space for loved ones.
Terry was an exceptional host, known for his summer cookouts where his grilling expertise was on full display. He took pride in preparing abundant food, ensuring everyone left with a take-home box. His "man cave" became a beloved gathering spot for games and holiday celebrations. A passionate lover of jazz, Terry enjoyed all styles, from straight-ahead to smooth, and had a deep appreciation for African and African-American art. His "me time" was spent listening to his cherished jazz vinyl collection or relaxing with a good movie.
Professionally, Terry excelled as a telecommunications engineer, culminating in his retirement after over a decade of service with Verizon, where he was highly respected by his colleagues and staff.
Terry is survived by his devoted wife, Lillian, their sons Charles A. Barnes (Aisha) and his sons Isaiah, Charlie, and Orion, and Jermain M. Barnes and his daughters Zoe and Chyanne. Zoe's brother, Josiah, was a bonus grandson, all of whom he adored, making sure their Back-to-School and Christmas lists were always fulfilled.
He is also survived by his beloved mother, Mattie Louise McNeill Barnes; three brothers: Clarence R. Barnes III (Phelicia) and their sons Vincent, Kristopher, and Avery; Hassan Barnes (Donna) and their children Telon, Malcolm, John, and Arlandria; Valdez Williams (Jennifer) and his children Harper and Jackson; and three sisters: Whitney Barnes-Green (Linwood) and their son Ameer; Ayisha Adams (David) and their sons David Jr. (Lychelle) and Ahmad (Shanya); and Jamillah Freeman and her children Eman Aswadi-Heath (Marcus), Zaiah, and Joshua.
Terry’s memory will live on through a host of cousins, his Whiteville HS and Howard University families, the Hand Dancing community, Crossover Church members, coworkers, friends, neighbors, and all who were blessed to know him.
Terry's dazzling smile, his steadfast faith, and his loving heart will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever shine brightly in the lives of those he touched.
