Sybil E. Jones Obituary

Born on February 3, 1925, in New Amsterdam, Guyana, Sybil Elaine Johnson was the daughter of James Victor Johnson and Meta Elizabeth Tubbs. Sybil spent much of her childhood in New Amsterdam amid Guyana’s lush surroundings, where she developed her deep love for family, faith, and community. As a young woman, she married Maurice Berkeley Jones and together they built a home filled with love, guidance, and a growing family of eight children.

Sybil’s early adult life was marked by hard work and resourcefulness. While Maurice worked diligently as a postal clerk and later as a postmaster along the Essequibo Coast, Sybil’s entrepreneurial spirit blossomed. After completing a hairdressing course in New Amsterdam, she quickly became known as one of the best hairdressers for miles around her village. Using a one-burner kerosene stove to heat pressing combs and curling irons, her skilled hands would wash, press, and style the hair of teachers, nurses, and community leaders alike in her home salon. Her bustling abode became a gathering place for family, friends, and customers from all walks of life.

While in Essequibo, Sybil mastered balancing numerous roles—rearing poultry in coops under the house, baking bread, sewing, and selling healthy iced desserts to neighbors—all while ensuring her children had what they needed to succeed. She cherished the simple joys of life, from the fruit trees in her backyard to the shared meals with her family. By the time the family left the Essequibo Coast, Sybil had not only expanded her hairdressing business but also forged lifelong friendships that would endure for decades.

In 1966, Sybil and her family moved from Essequibo to Georgetown, settling first in Campbellville and later in the Clonbrook area. There, she continued her hairdressing business but shifted her focus to ensuring her children received the best possible education. She took an active role in their academic success, working closely with educators and enrolling her children in extra lessons when necessary. Despite losing her mother at the tender age of five and witnessing the premature passing of many relatives, Sybil instilled in her children a deep faith in God and encouraged them to envision purposeful, fulfilling lives. She was firm, loving, and unyielding in her dedication to her children’s success.

In the years that followed, Sybil’s family continued to grow, and she welcomed many into her home—cousins, friends’ children, and relatives in need of care. When she immigrated to the United States, she embraced a new chapter in her life as a caregiver. Sybil wholeheartedly took on home health care roles, finding great joy in providing the same love and attention to the elderly that she had shown her own family. Her home also became a sanctuary for her grandchildren, often caring for as many as five at a time, providing her working adult children with a loving and nurturing daycare for their little ones.

A woman of deep faith and boundless kindness, Sybil’s presence brought joy to every family occasion. She traveled extensively to visit loved ones across the Caribbean, Canada, Alaska, and even Norway, making weddings and other milestones even more memorable with her warmth and grace.

Sybil was a woman of strength, love, and compassion, and her near century-long legacy lives on in the hearts of all who loved her. To mourn her passing, Sybil leaves her surviving children: Gerald Jones, Desiree Marcus (Gladstone), Selwyn Jones (June), Corinne Robertson, and Garfield Jones (Rebecca); 3 siblings; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends who will forever cherish her memory. Sybil was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Jones Sr.; 4 siblings; her children, Dawn Jones, Maurice Jones Jr., Camille Jones; and her daughter-in-law, Daphne Jones.
