Sandra Pone Obituary

Sandra Justine Davis was on April 20, 1947 in Washington DC at Freedman’s Hospital (currently, Howard University Hospital), the daughter Adelaide Justine Davis Letcher and Frederick Douglass Davis. She peacefully passed at Howard University Hospital on February 2, 2024.

She was born into well-established family in Washington, DC. She was brought home to what she referred to as “the castle,” where her family lived in Logan Circle She was raised by her mother, Adelaide and her mother’s sister, Aunt Vashi, who gave her a wondrous childhood. Sandra was educated during her primary years in Catholic School attending St. Augustine’s School. Sandra desired attend public High School and attended and graduated from McKinley High School. She completed her undergraduate degree at the DC Teachers College.

During her time as a student at DC Teachers College she married Thomas A. Jackson, Jr. together they had two children Thomas A. Jackson, III and Jainine Marie. She chose to pursue education as a career like her great- aunt, Florence Letcher Thomas. Sandra achieved her master’s degree in education from the Catholic University of America.

In 1980, she met and married Clayton Pone, and had a daughter, Christen Pone. She adored her career in education in DC Public Schools and taught at Stanton Elementary School in SE Washington, DC for her entire 30- year career. She appreciated her career and loved the process of having her students master subjects that may have been challenging for them. Sandra would go on to become a member Salem Baptist Church, her grandmother’s church and after became quite devout in her participation in church, reading The Bible and praying often. Sandra was also one for surprises. After her retirement from teaching, she took a pivot and operated a government contracting landscaping business-Kennedy Development, LLC. a business she ran until her passing. She had a quick wit, a great sense of humor and a strong sense of justice. She hated to see anyone not get what they deserved and fought hard for people who were and weren’t her family. She always nurtured those who needed nurturing and consoled those who needed consolation, it didn’t matter. She surrounded herself with many faithful and true friends, and she could talk on the phone with them every day. She always had enough time for everybody. Everyone had a piece of her and had a special place in her heart. She filled everyone’s cup with her generous pouring.

Sandra leaves family to continue speaking her name and cherishing her stories and memories: her son, Thomas A. Jackson, III (Agnes Molette Jackson),daughters: Jainine Herrington( Ronnie Herrington), Christen Pone- Sanchez (Danilo ‘Dan’ Sanchez) and Yansley Pone. Her grandchildren: Justina Jackson, Dominique Jackson, Isaiah Pone, Makayla Herrington, Mansur Sanchez, Mayisa Sanchez, Maryam Sanchez and Hannah Sanchez and her great- grandson, Parker Jackson-Best.
