Mona Marie LaMothe Smith gained her angel wings on April 13, 2026 at Inova Critical Care Recovery Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia, surrounded by her family. Mona was born on July 11, 1957 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Gwendolyn Mitchell LaMothe Olivier and the late Leroy Vincent LaMothe. Loving wife of the late Dr. Edward Nathaniel “Nat’ Smith, Jr. Devoted mother of Edward Nathaniel Smith, III “Trey” and Arianne LaMothe Smith and cherished mother-in-law of David Almarza Diaz.
Mona’s life was marked by a dedication to excellence and an unwavering determination to achieve her goals. She graduated from St. Mary’s Dominican High School in 1975 and pursued her passion for healthcare at Louisiana State University School of Nursing, earning both her RN and BSN in 1980. Her nursing career began at the renowned Charity Hospital in New Orleans where she worked as an Emergency Room nurse. After a glowing career as a critical care nurse, Mona decided to leverage her extensive medical experience to embark on a new career in pharmaceutical sales, where she remained until her retirement.
She was an active member of the Capital Speakers Club and the Washington, D.C. Chapter of Links, Inc., reflecting her commitment to personal growth and community service.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Edward Nathaniel Smith, III “Trey” and Arianne LaMothe Smith; son-in-law, David Almarza Diaz; mother & step-father, Gwendolyn Mitchell LaMothe Olivier and Armand Olivier, Sr.; sisters Shelly LaMothe Smith and Erin Claire LaMothe; sister-in-law Gail Patrice Smith; her niece and nephew, 2 great nephews, one great-niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mona was preceded in death, a mere 9 days earlier, by her loving husband, Nat; father, Leroy Vincent LaMothe; and father and mother-in-law, Edward Nathaniel Smith, Sr. and Georgia Long Smith.
