The Life Story of Mildred “Millie” Gloster
Mildred Elizabeth Gloster, affectionately known as "Millie," was born on July 4, 1941, in the close-knit town of Kingstree, South Carolina, to the late Inez (Johnson) and Roscoe Gamble. Her life was a testament to the values of love, service, and family that were instilled in her from her humble beginnings.
Growing up in Kingstree, a town cherished for its strong sense of community and familial bonds, Millie’s aspirations extended far beyond her original home. She graduated from Tomlinson High School in 1959 and pursued higher education at Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina. It was there that she earned her degree in 1961. During her time at Voorhees, Millie met the love of her life, Herman D. Gloster, who would become her lifelong partner.
In 1964, Millie and Herman moved to Washington, D.C., where they were married on February 1st. Their union, which spanned over six decades, was a beautiful testament to their love and commitment. Each year, she visited Williamsburg, VA with her beloved husband. Together, they were blessed with two wonderful children, Kimberly Michele Gloster and Herman Brian Gloster, who became the center of Millie’s world.
Millie embarked on a long and distinguished career with the United States Department of the Interior, where she dedicated 30 years of service before retiring. Upon retirement, she re-entered the workforce with the Environmental Protection Agency for 13 years. Her work was more than just a career; it was a legacy that she took great pride in, often reminiscing about the meaningful impact she made.
A woman of deep warmth and generosity, Millie never met a stranger. Her love language was clear in her Acts of Service and the Quality Time she devoted to others. She was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., where she found immense joy in her service to the church community. Millie’s work with the youth and her role on the Altar Guild were particularly close to her heart. Her artistic talents shone brightly through the beautiful arts and crafts she created, especially her cherished teapot collection. Each year, she eagerly anticipated the holiday season, where she would craft special pieces for the annual Church Bazaar, a tradition she held dear.
Millie also quietly gave back to the community, serving as a silent volunteer at Bishop McNamara High School, where she donated her service hours to a family each year. Her selflessness and dedication were hallmarks of her character.
During her time alone, Millie enjoyed several hobbies. For instance, she enjoyed watching and attending WNBA sports games, watching Hallmark movies, and HGTV where she emulated many of her craft ideas.
Above all, Millie’s greatest joy was her family. She nurtured deep, unique relationships with her children, extended family, and friends, creating bonds that were as enduring as they were loving. She was affectionately known as “Momma Gloster” to the friends of her children and adopted each of them as her own. Most of all, she especially adored her granddaughters, Haleigh and Logan, with whom she spent countless afternoons and weekends. Their time together was filled with singing, dancing, tea parties, and card games, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
Mildred Elizabeth Gloster transitioned to her eternal home on Monday, August 12, 2024. Her legacy of love and kindness lives on through her family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Herman D. Gloster; her daughter, Kimberly Michele; her son, Herman Brian; her daughter-in-law, LeTrecia; and her two granddaughters, Haleigh and Logan. She is also survived by her three sisters, Minnie Viola (Lewis) Bines, Mariam (Leroy) Alexander, and Rose (Richard) Davis; her two sisters-in-law, Betty Gloster and Joann Gloster; and her brother-in-law, Vance Gloster. Millie also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends and associates whose lives she touched with her generous spirit.
