Mary Rowe, of Washington DC passed away serenely at home on Sunday, January 26, 2025. She was surrounded by her family and protected by her faith in God. A lifelong Washingtonian, she was a graduate of Dunbar High School, and received a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Social Work from Howard University, her many accomplishments include: former president of the National Association of University Women (DC Chapter), former board member for both The United Way and The Prevention of Blindness Society, (DC Chapters) as well as a precinct captain for the DC Board of Elections.
For over 40 years, Mary Elizabeth was a proud member of XI Omega, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She also had a deep joy of playing bridge and she became so good at it that she became a Duplicate Bridge champion and was certified as a Diamond Level player of the American Bridge Association, while being recognized as a certified bridge instructor. After winning multiple awards, trophies and tournaments, she became the founder of the "Monday Activities" program, at XI Omega, where she used her expertise to teach bridge to the members and served as an adjunct professor at her alma mater, Howard. Her love of bridge continued after her retirement, with weekly Friday luncheons with friends followed by games.
Mary Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her husband of 57 years, Yancey A Rowe JR, her eldest son Gregory and her daughter-in-law, Traci. She is survived by her daughter Nancyrenee, son Dwayne, grandson Nicholas, daughter-in-law Christine; other relatives and a host of friends.
Services will be held at People's Congregational Church, UCC located at 4704 13th Street NW, Washington, DC 20011 on Thursday, February 13, 2025. The family will receive visitors beginning at 10 a.m. followed a homegoing service at 11 a.m.
A repast will be held in the church Fellowship Hall following the conclusion of the service.
