Mary Geneva Johnson (nee Geneva Mae Williams), 96, Temple Hills, MD, died October 29, 2023, surrounded by family after living a long and wonderful life. She was born in Charlotte, NC, on April 15, 1927, graduated from Dunbar High School, Washington, DC, in 1945, and married Clinton S. Johnson, Jr. (C.S.) in January 1946.
Mary and C.S. raised their family of five children while living on military installations in Portsmouth, Virginia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Bayonne, New Jersey; and Middletown, Rhode Island; and Washington, D.C., before making Temple Hills, Maryland their permanent residence when C.S. retired from active duty in 1968.
In Middletown, Mary was the bookkeeper for Warwick Shoppers World, a regional department store chain. In Maryland she was the manager of the Washington Shopping Plate division, Credit Bureau, Inc. (now Equifax). After retiring from Equifax in 1990, she was a receptionist for the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA) in Cheltenham, Md until she fully retired in 2007.
She had tremendous compassion for others and a keen eye for identifying those in need. She was adept at lending just the right kind of support -– a listening ear, a thought-provoking question, or one of her homemade pound cakes -- to encourage others and heal emotional wounds. She will be greatly missed but leaves behind a tremendous legacy of faith, resilience, courage, encouragement, and love.
Mary is survived by her children Clinton S. Johnson III (Wilma), King George, Virginia; Yolanda Johnson Pruitt (Norman), Ashton, Maryland; and Stephen B. Johnson, Temple Hills, Maryland; grandchildren Michael Johnson, Dimetrius Johnson, Noriko Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Lauren Pruitt (Valerie), Victoria Walker Holton, (Anthony), Damani Reddix, India Fykes Byrd, and Brandy Fikes Baynes (Barrinton), 13 great grandchildren, Godson William Edmond Clifford Jr. (Sirena), sister-in-law Mary Ella Williams (Melvin), nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clinton S. Johnson, Jr., her sons Gerald C. Johnson (Gwendolyn) and Everett H. Johnson (Gail), her granddaughter Mary Ella Pruitt, parents James Frank Williams and Birdie Alexander Williams, sisters Berniece Williams Jones, Willie John Williams, Margaret Naomi Williams, Infant Williams, Birdie Frances Williams Gray, Ruth Barbara Williams, Edith Pearl Williams, and her brothers James Frank Williams, Jr., Roy Junius Edward Williams, and Melvin Williams.
