Marion Mann, M.D. Obituary

Retired Brigadier General Marion Mann, MD, PhD, former Dean of the Howard University College of Medicine, passed away at his home in Washington, DC on August 20, 2022. He was 102 years of age. Born on March 29, 1920 in Atlanta, Georgia, son Cora Casey Mann and Levi James Mann, he was graduated with honors from Tuskegee Institute in 1940.

First Lieutenant Mann married his college sweetheart, Ruth Maurine Reagin of Selma Alabama in 1943 and their son, Marion Nicholas Mann, was born in December 1944. His daughter, Judith Reagin Mann was born in June 1949. He continued his distinguished armed services career and in 1974, Colonel Mann became Commander of the 2290th US Army Hospital. He received his final promotion to Brigadier General in 1975.

Marion Mann, MD was graduated as president of his class and with honors from Howard University College of Medicine in 1954. He earned at PhD from Georgetown University and was awarded two honorary doctorates from Georgetown (1979) and from the University of Massachusetts in 1984.

Dr. Mann was an assistant professor and then associate professor while serving for five years (1962-1967) as Deputy Medical Examiner in the Coroner's Office of the District of Columbia. In 1970, Mann was promoted to full professor and was selected to be the 12th Dean of Howard University's College of Medicine.

As Dean, his accomplishments include the completion of funding for the Seeley G Mudd building. Other notable achievements in the role of Dean included the establishment of the Departments of Family Practice, Dermatology, Neurology, Oncology, the Center for Sickle Cell Disease, and the Center for Cancer Research. He retired as Dean in 1980, but returned to the University in 1988 in the position of University Associate Vice President for Research.

After retiring, Dr. Mann volunteered at the National Archives and at the National Arboretum. He also compiled and wrote, through exhaustive research with documents reaching as far back as 1820, a Genealogy and Family History of the Kigh, Mann, Reagin and Sykes Families. In his "spare" time, he loved gardening and was known for his beautiful landscaping and abundant vegetables.

Marion Mann was the last surviving of the six Mann brothers. Marion's and Ruth's progeny include, in addition to their son and daughter, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren (plus another due in November/December 2022).
