Margie Green Obituary

Mrs. Margie Marie Johnson Green was born on May 10, 1938 in Suffolk, Virginia. She was the second eldest of three siblings: Mr. Shirley Johnson, Jr. (85, NJ), Mr. Hurley Johnson (62, SC, Deceased 2008), and Mr. Reginald Keith Johnson (69, MD). She was the only daughter of the late Mr. Shirley Johnson, Sr., and Mrs. Loadie Yates Johnson.

Growing up in Suffolk, Margie attended Andrew J. Brown Elementary and later attended Booker T. Washington High School, where she was very active in extracurricular activities. Throughout high school, Margie was a Majorette for one of the best dance teams in Suffolk. With hard work and dedication, she was later promoted to Head Majorette during her junior year. In addition to her dance activities, Margie also played small forward for the girls’ basketball team. Outside of academics, Margie was an integral part of what is now known as Metropolitan Baptist Church, attending Bible Study every Wednesday, and subsequently earning trips to Seaview Beach and Amusement Park, in Virginia Beach, Virginia – a popular recreational area established for African-Americans in the mid-1940s.

After graduating high school, Margie moved to Washington, D.C., where she attended the Cortez W. Peters School of Business. While in D.C., Margie met and later married Vernon Sylvester Green, Jr., in July 1959, and nurtured him as a loving wife for forty-one (41) years, until his death on April 5, 2000. From this matrimony, Margie was blessed with three beautiful children: Veronica Lisa Green (55, MD, Deceased 2016), Randy Bernard Green (50, MD), and Vernon S. Green, III (49, MD). From these three children, Vernon and Margie were further blessed with four beautiful grandchildren: Brian Leonard Green (39, MD), Tiffany Green (27, DC), Vernon S. Green, IV (16, MD), and Makaila Joy Green (13, MD). Vernon Jr., and particularly, Margie was fortunate to have the opportunity to provide never-ending love and support to Brian, Tiffany, Vernon IV, and Makaila. Margie was particularly active in the younger grandchildren’s lives, consistently baby-sitting and providing home-cooked meals.

Not only did Margie work hard to provide love and support to her family but she also worked hard in all her endeavors, especially in a professional capacity. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and administrative assistant for Howard University Hospital (HUH), in Washington, D.C., providing more than thirty (30) years of exceptional service to the community. Her HUH career was the job that kept giving – it allowed her children to attend the University at no cost – an invaluable opportunity.

In her leisure time, Margie was an avid sports fan. She especially loved both college and professional football and basketball games, routinely cheering for the home teams. Similar to her fervor for sporting events, she celebrated her spirituality and love for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at magnitudes many times greater than any sports event, attending and joyfully serving as an Usher for Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, in Clinton, MD, since the early 1990s.

Margie Marie Johnson Green lived a full life and is survived by her three (3) sons: Randy, Vernon, III, and Brian. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Mrs. Jonnae Y. Green (48, MD) and Mrs. Sandra Maalihan (50, MD), along with her two brothers: Mr. June Johnson and Mr. Reginald Johnson. Margie is further survived by her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Julia Johnson (NJ) and Mrs. Nettie Johnson (SC), as well as multiple close Friends: Mrs. Annette Jackson, her son, Mr. Andre Jackson, and Mrs. Lee Seymour, along with a multitude of extended Family and Friends.
