Mamie M. Milanes was born June 17, 1927, in Pitt County, North Carolina to the late Johnny Blount and Mamie Blount. She was the sister twin of one of her two brothers, Johnny G. Blount (twin brother), Daniel L. Blount and one sister, Annie R. Dixon. Mamie, affectionately known by “Mimi” passed peacefully from earthly labor to heavenly reward on November 30, 2023.
Mamie grew up in Farmville, N.C. and graduated from HB Suggs High School. She also gave her life to Christ at an early age when joining Moyes Chapel Baptist Church, now known as the Moyes Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
Early in her life Mamie married the late Joe H. Moye. From that union, she had a daughter, Dr. Carolyn S. Moye of Alexandria, Va. After arriving in Washington, DC, Mamie also took evening classes at one of the local High Schools to further her education. She worked as an Elevator Operator at the old Statler Hilton Hotel and later as a waitress in many well-known and past establishments.
In her later years Mimi married the late Willis J. Milanes of Washington, DC. They were married for 33 years until he was called Home. Her love for God, family and friends was undeniable. She and her late husband loved to entertain their family, friends and attend the Redskins (Commanders) games. which she was a long-standing fan. Mimi was known for her great cooking, loving spirit and creative style. In her reflective moments, she occasionally shared her thoughts in writing poems, restyling garments, and jewelry.
Mamie Milanes was the epitome of love and giving. She brought a smile to everyone who she was blessed to meet. She and her late husband, Willis J. Milanes joined Metropolitan Baptist Church by Christian Experience 1995.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories: daughter, Deacon Carolyn Moye; Step-daughter, Sheree Pate of Georgia; Step-grandchildren, Cameron and Connor Pate of GA, and Kwashie Eddy of Florida; Sister-in-laws Catherine Green, and Daisdell Blount of NC ; Brother-in-law Herman Brandson of Md; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
