Louise Barrett Obituary

Louise Bullock Barrett (age 92) passed peacefully in her home in Washington, DC.

Louise was born and raised in a farming community in Elm City, N.C. and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School.  Through a mutual friend, she met her future husband Paul A. Barrett.  On June 17, 1950, they were married and moved to Washington, DC. To this union four children were born.

When her children began school full time, she entered the workforce at the Washington Hospital Center. She found a profession that fit her natural abilities by helping others and administering to their needs. This introduction to the nursing and medical field was the prelude to her returning to school and receiving higher level educational endeavors that furthered her career. In 1990, she retired from the Surgical Treatment Unit at the Washington Hospital Center as a Senior Licensed Practical Nurse.

Louise was raised in a loving and Christian household and attended a variety of churches during her formative years. In the Spring of 1987, she reaffirmed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior to which she was baptized into the fellowship of the First Baptist Church of Randolph Street in Washington, DC.  She entered and served faithfully in the nursing ministry at the Senior Citizens Center until her health started failing.

Throughout her life, she had the most engaging, heartwarming and welcoming smile.  She displayed a genuine concern to those around her and shared guidance and common-sense solutions to others without being offensive.  She freely laughed at inconsequential situations because she had a sense of joy-filled humor.  Mostly, Louise took much delight in her children and grandchildren life experiences and achievements.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 30 years, Paul A. Barrett; her parents, Alfred and Maggie (nee Ricks) Bullock; 12 siblings: John F. Bullock, Martha B. Bynum, Virginia B. Ellis, Charlie Bullock, Melinda Bullock, Emma B. Lindsey, Lizzie B. Williams, Mary B. Phillips, Christine B. Brown, Lillian B. Harris, Columbus Bullock, and Dorothy B. Garrett.

Louise leaves to cherish her memory and to continue her legacy, her daughters Louise G. Barrett, Gloria J. Barrett, Lillian B. Lyons (Gregory), and son, William H. Barrett (Gilda): her grandchildren: Toran C. Barrett (Lydia), Courtney Johnson, Tiffany R. Barrett, Chad B. Barrett, and Jarvis T. Grigsby, Jr.; three dedicated nephews: Alford Isaiah Bullock; Noah A. Harris (Ada Lillian); and Lester “Smack” Barrett, Jr.; a devoted niece, Jennie O. Barrett; and a host of other beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Capital Caring Health, Philanthropy, 3180 Fairview Park Drive, Headquarters/Suite 500, Falls Church, VA  22042 or call 703-531-2380.
