Leslie Thomas Obituary

Leslie Louise (Mathews) Thomas, 71, of Washington, DC, passed away on December 28, 2023. Leslie was born on March 8, 1952, in Washington, DC, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Clift & India Mathews. She was a beloved mother, devoted sister, and cherished grandmother. Her mother was a hard worker, a nurse and surgical technician. Her father was one of the first African American Marines in the US Marine Corp, a “Montford Point Marine”. He was also one of the first African American to attend a major-profession school for Umpires.

Leslie received her education in the public schools of Washington, DC. She attended Lucretia Mott Elementary School (the same school that her mother and father attended) she later went on to study at Gordan Junior High in Georgetown where she was a Cheerleader and Cherry Blossom Princess. She was always a very good student. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Leslie pursued her dream of becoming an airline stewardess. She attended Weaver Airline School in Kansas City, Missouri, where she earned a certificate. She continued her education with various airlines, including American Airlines, TWA, United, and Delta. In recent years, she trained on several different airline platforms to continue working as a travel agent.

Leslie had a passion for her family, friends and life. Reading, Yoga and being around family and friends were her favorite hobbies. You would never find her without a book or her e-reader. She was particularly fond of history, current events and real-life adventures. Bookstores, card shops, and libraries were her favorite places to get lost in.

Leslie was one of those people who always had a smile on her face. She had a friendly and outgoing personality, always ready to strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She had a love for travel and enjoyed exploring new places. Leslie's adventurous spirit took her to almost every state in the nation; London, England; Paris, France; Canada; Puerto Rico; New Zealand and Australia where, she made lasting memories. In the early years, she was often accompanied by her son, Nathaniel B. Braxton, who was the pride and joy of her life. Many times, her sister was her travel companion.

Leslie's career as a travel agent spanned over 52 years. She truly loved her job, despite the challenges that came with it. She had the patience to handle even the most demanding clients and absurd requests. Leslie's dedication and commitment to her work was truly remarkable.

Raised in a tight-knit family, Leslie had a strong support system throughout her life. (Baptized as Christian early in life) she knew the love of God and always depended on it. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her son, Nathaniel B. Braxton, and her grandson, Shawn N. Hatcher. Her sister (Kathy) and brother-in-law (Kenneth) also live on to remember her fondly with love. She is also survived by her lifelong friend and the father of her only son, Welmore (Butch) Braxton. Leslie practically adopted Braxton’s children, Welmore Braxton, Jr. and Kalise Braxton, from a previous relationship. Her friends are too numerous to count but carry love for her in their heart. Leslie's family and friends were always there for her, and she valued their presence and love.

Leslie Louise (Mathews) Thomas will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her warm smile, love for life, and kind-hearted nature will be remembered fondly by those whose lives she touched. May she rest in eternal peace.
