Laura H. Tompkins Obituary

Laura Hutchinson Tompkins (95), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Laura, known as Rusty since childhood, was born in Washington, DC to Grace and Ellsworth Hutchinson Sr. She graduated from Dunbar High School and attended Howard University. Laura served on many boards including the Jefferson Townhouse Corporation, The Washington Hearing and Speech Society, St. Anselm's Abbey School, and the GW Hospital Women's Board. Laura was a lifetime member of the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association and the Auxiliary to Medical Chirurgical Society of Washington, DC and served as president of both.


Laura was outgoing, enjoyed traveling, and played pinochle. She met William G. Tompkins, MD in high school and married him three years later in 1951. She is survived by her children Lornel G. Tompkins, MD, William G. Tompkins, Jr. (Dana) Brett A. Tompkins, and Lisa Tompkins Brown (Gabriel), five grandchildren, Isaac, David, Hadassah, Gabriel, and Tiffany, two godchildren Victoria and Joseph. She is also survived by a devoted sister in-law Alice T. Davis, many nieces, nephews, her two grand-dogs, Dakota and Sniper, and many friends.


She is predeceased by her husband of 25 years William G. Tompkins, MD, her parents Grace and Ellsworth Hutchinson Sr., and her brothers James Alvin Hutchinson, Sr., and Ellsworth W. Hutchinson, Jr.
