Keith Burriss Obituary

Keith Anthony Burriss, 67, departed this life on December 22, 2023, at his home in Washington, D.C.  Keith was born on July 13, 1956, to parents, Flora Mae Dunn and Frederick Burriss, Jr. in Washington, D.C.  Keith attended Archbishop John Carroll High School and graduated in 1974, where he served as student government president. After graduation, Keith attended Howard University until 1975, and North Carolina Central University from 1982-1985 as a pre-med major.

After leaving Howard University in 1975, Keith devoted himself to a life of service spending four years on active duty in the United States Air Force, followed by thirteen years in the Army National Guard, where he served as a combat medic. He also worked as a respiratory therapist at Durham VA Hospital and Duke University Medical Center.

Even outside of the military, Keith continued his support by serving as a civilian contractor, with Kellog, Brown & Root (KBR) performing search and rescue missions in Iraq. During a military supply operation, Keith was in a twenty-truck convoy from Joint Base Bilad in the Sunni Triangle to Al Asad Air Base. During the operation, an improvised explosive device detonated, and blew up one of the trucks in the convoy, which began to burn.  In a heroic act, Keith stopped his truck and pulled two KBR specialists from a burning vehicle.

After returning from Iraq, Keith worked for Knight-Swift Transportation as a truck driver. He studied as an apprentice in the Construction Apprenticeship Federation. In 2020, Keith became a certified Journeyman Electrician.

Keith had a deep appreciation for literature and was an avid reader who read as much as he could, whenever he could. He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones and attended Ward Memorial AME Church.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents Flora Mae Dunn and Frederick Burriss, Jr.  He is survived by his daughters, F. Antoinette Burriss and Jacqueline A. Burriss, four brothers; Frederick Burriss, III, Reggie Davis, David Walton, Freddie Burriss, and seven sisters; Patricia Overton, Deitra Lowe, Detrice Burriss, Lynn Webler, Joan Burriss, Melonie Burriss, and Freda Burriss; dearly loved aunts, Joan Broadus, Welma Lucas, Alice Burruss, and host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
