Katherine Elizabeth Smith was born in Washington, DC on August 11, 1937 the oldest daughter of Dorothy (“Dottie”) Matthews. She graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., and received a B.A. and two M.A. degrees from William Patterson College. Katherine was a certified reading specialist with a graduate degree in Education Administration & Supervision. She was a beloved elementary school teacher for over 30 years in Glen Rock, NJ where she shared her passion for reading with her students. She received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Governor’s Teacher Recognition Program.
Katherine was a faithful and active member of Grace Congregational Church where she served as a greeter, served in the alter care ministry, and read announcements at Sunday services. Katherine held memberships and leadership positions in various civic organizations, including Corresponding Secretary for the Bergen County Links, Inc. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Sidney R. Smith, Jr.; sisters Thelma Delaney, Nadine Carter, and Shirley Harris (James); daughters Lisa (Maurice), Michelle (Bradley), and Sharon (Bernard); son Sidney III (Lynn); grandsons, Matthew (Brittany), Quentin, Samuel, and Sidney IV; granddaughters, Courtney, Sarah, Ashlynn, and Michela, sisters-in-law Inez Smith Reid and Alene Smith, a host of nephews and a niece, and many other relatives and friends. Katherine is predeceased by her mother and her brother Willard.
