Joyce Buchanan Obituary

Remembering the Life Of

Joyce Barbara Buchanan

Joyce B. Buchanan a resident of Washington, DC, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Although Joyce was born in Mobile, Alabama on September 10, 1938, she considered Washington, DC her home. Joyce was the last child of five children born to Edward and Leona Mitchell in Mobile, Alabama. She was baptized as a Catholic in Mobile, Alabama on October 9, 1938. In 1956, Joyce graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School in Boston, MA, and her close cousin Janice Williams-Madison lived together while attending the same high school. After graduation, Joyce returned to Mobile, Alabama to attend Springhill College.

Joyce met her husband, Robert Buchanan at Springhill College and in the late 1950s they got married. In marriage, they were blessed with four beautiful children. After graduation, Robert and Joyce moved North, where Robert obtained jobs in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. Washington, DC is where they took up permanent residence.

Joyce started her professional career in property management and began working at several properties in Southeast and Northeast Washington, DC. She had several positions at various properties, such as a Receptionist, Assistant Manager, and Property Manager. Before she retired she worked at Edgewood Management as the Resident Manager, where she received numerous awards and certificates for her outstanding performance. After retirement, she continued to live at Edgewood Commons (formerly Edgewood Apartments) where she resided for almost 40 years. Joyce loved the Edgewood Community and did not want to live anywhere else.

In her free time, Joyce loved to shop at the mall with friends and family. She especially got pleasure going to “Bingo” and playing the Lottery. Joyce also loved the many road trips to Mobile, Alabama to see her family, especially stopping in Birmingham, AL to see her nephew, Lee Mitchell, Sr., Monica, and family. She also enjoyed going to Washington Commanders (formerly Washington Redskins), Washington Nationals games, and other sporting events, with her daughter, Diahann, son-in-law Howard, and granddaughter, Jada.

Joyce was preceded in death by her, sons David Mitchell Buchanan and Michael Edward Buchanan, as well as her daughter, Diahann Joyce Buchanan-Mitchell, all of Washington, DC— also, her parents and three sisters, and one brother from Mobile, AL.

Joyce’s life will be remembered by her, son, Robert L. Buchanan V and cherished by her devoted family members, Warrene F. Sawyer, Angela S. Rock, Leon N. Rock, and Felicia N. Rock, as well as, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one son-in-law, many nieces and nephews, host of cousins, and close family friends including Sylvia, Sharlene, Wanda, Judy, and Mary to name a few.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at T&N Reliable Nursing in Washington, DC. Specifically, we would like to acknowledge her Nursing Aides, Glory and Chantal for their attentiveness and loving care given to Joyce before her earthly departure on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.
