Jonita “Jo” B. Carter, passed away at 91 on April 18, 2026. She was a woman of deep faith, grace, and devotion to family and community. Born November 7, 1934, in Racine, Wisconsin, she was the daughter of Fred and Eunice Bowman and sister of Freddie Mae Browne, all of whom preceded her in death.
Jo graduated from Fisk University and earned a master’s degree in social work from Howard University. She began her career at DC General Hospital after which she went on to become a psychotherapist and life coach, dedicating her life to helping others.
Known for her elegance, warmth, and grace, Jo had a gift for making others feel seen and heard, valued, and loved. She will be remembered for her benevolence, generosity, and the lasting impact she made on those around her.
She is survived by her husband, Richard “Dickie” S. Carter; her son, Darryl W. Carter; her brother, Ed Bowman (Jane) of Racine; her sister, Joyce Cole of Houston; her sister-in-law, Patricia Jordan of New York City; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
