Jon "J.R." Raymond Meyers Obituary

In loving memory of Jon Raymond "J.R." Meyers, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend, and community leader who left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. J.R. passed away on July 27, 2024.


In life, J.R. was devoted to his wife Karen and their daughter Nina and spent much of the last 27 years creating a family of love, affection, and togetherness. In 2012 with Karen , J.R. founded The Meyers Group, LLC where he served as Senior Partner.  The Meyers Group is a boutique lobbying firm specializing in issues before the District of Columbia government. Since its founding, the firm has secured significant procurements for its clients: Oracle, Gainwell Technology, PhRMA, RAI, and Specialty HomeCare. They include managed care organizations, affordable housing developments, and Fortune 100 insurance companies. J.R. also served as Vice Chairman of the Board for the Downtown Business Improvement District.


Prior to the Meyers Group, J.R. served for six years as the Chief of Staff to the city’s Ward 7 Councilmember, The Honorable Yvette Alexander. In this role, he helped establish a DMV office in Ward 7, virtual unemployment insurance call centers, an improved payroll payment system for district government employees, and the city’s new Medicaid Management Information System to more efficiently process claims for D.C. Medicaid recipients. J.R. also supported several candidates for public office, managing campaigns and advising other candidates for office.


Before arriving in the District, J.R. and Karen had launched and managed private and public enterprises in Atlanta and Chicago, including 24HRE.com and Meyers Detailing. In Chicago, J.R. served as chief of staff to Dr. Renee Grant Mitchell, then chief officer for specialized services for Chicago Public Schools. He also served as general manager of SCR Transportation for Pam and Stan Rakestraw.


J.R. was born November 20, 1962 at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland (now known as “Joint Base Andrews”). He earned his bachelor's degree psychology from Morehouse College (Class of ‘84) and his Juris Doctor from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law (Class of ‘97). He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Pi Chapter) and affectionately named “Steak” by his brothers of the Fall ‘81 line (The Krimson P.L.O.).


J.R. is survived by his wife Karen and his daughter Nina. He is also survived by his father Joseph R. Meyers, M.D. (Charlotte) and his mother Tressa Chambers Meyers; his sister Monica Meyers Turnbo (David); his niece Sasha J. Turnbo and nephew/Godson David V. Turnbo, Jr.; his mother-in-law Delores Mays (Robert); his aunts Joyce Meyers and Conalita Chambers Grossley and his Uncle James W. Chambers, III. There are also numerous relatives, friends, fraternity brothers, and clients who mourn J.R.’s passing.
