Jeanne B. Whitted

Jeanne Dolores Brown Whitted, 93, fondly known as “Ickey” was born in Washington, DC on August 10, 1928. She was the daughter of Allen Hayes Brown and Charlotte Bailey Brown.  Jeanne was a proud lifelong resident of Washington, DC.

Jeanne was educated in the District of Columbia Public Schools and received graduate degrees from Shaw University, North Carolina and New York University, New York. Jeanne’s vocation was teaching, and she also served as an Assistant Vice Principal.   Developing young minds was her passion and she spent many years teaching English, Speech and Drama at T. Roosevelt Senior High in the Washington DC Public School System, she retired in 1980. 

 As an accomplished piano player, Jeanne loved all types of music especially jazz, enjoyed the challenge of completing jigsaw puzzles, was a writer and a great cook. One of her most proud achievements was publishing a cookbook titled “Recipes from Jeanne’s Gems”.

Until her illness, Jeanne was a faithful member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church where her mother had been a religious instructor.  Jeanne was active in her community, a member of the Democratic Committee and the Armstrong High School Class of 1945 Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, as well as her aunts Martha “Sophie” Bailey Bryant and Jean Bailey Mitchell, who were instrumental in her upbringing, the love of her life Milton O. Holmes and her cherished cats Cody and Blinky. She leaves to mourn cousins, friends, neighbors and beloved students.

The interment will be at The Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, MD.
