James Andrew Poindexter Obituary

“[W]ell done good and faithful servant . . . Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matthew 25:21

James (“Jim”) Andrew Poindexter Sr. was born in Unionville, Orange County, Virginia, on March 4, 1935, as the oldest son of the late James L. Poindexter and Mary C. Quarles Poindexter. Jim was educated in the DC Public Schools and graduated from Armstrong High School. He also studied accounting and business administration at Strayer College, in Washington, DC. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Jim enlisted in the Army in 1956. He was assigned to the Armor Branch and served as an Armor (Tank) Crewman. He achieved the rank of Specialist and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal upon his honorable discharge in 1959. After his military service, Jim found a job working for the DC Public Schools, where he met the love of his life, a music teacher named Doris Adelaide Brown. Doris and Jim were happily married for over fifty-seven years.

A hard worker, Jim was employed as a taxicab driver, an airport courier, an insurance salesman, and a retail salesperson at Sears and Montgomery Wards, where he frequently won regional and national sales awards. Jim was also an entrepreneur, who jointly owned two neighborhood stores with his brother and their business partners. He was an avid golfer and a member of several golf clubs. He traveled extensively to play golf regionally and nationally, competing in and winning many tournaments and trophies. Jim also enjoyed playing poker, and would play regularly with family and friends. He loved music, especially jazz, R&B and pop, and he listened to a wide variety of artists. And although he could not play an instrument, he thoroughly enjoyed the musical talents of his wife and children. He was their greatest fan!

Jim was a man of integrity and faith, and a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has gone to join his family and friends in heaven but his spirit will always remain in our hearts. His legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren and he will forever be missed. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Brown Poindexter. Their son, Joey Glen Poindexter, passed away on December 24, 2023. James (Jim) Andrew Poindexter is survived by his sister Jean Haskins, and his sister-in-law, Naima Abdul-Haqq. He is also survived by his children and their families: Bonny Poindexter Tavares Dean (husband Alfred W. Dean, Jr.) and her daughter Haley Simone Tavares; James Andrew Poindexter II and his children Kara Joelle Poindexter and James Andrew Poindexter III; Jon Harvard Poindexter and his wife Carla Jordan Poindexter and their children Jon Harvard Poindexter II, Quentin Jordan Poindexter, and Noelle “Toby” Elizabeth Poindexter; Kim Funderburk and her daughters Rebecca Funderburk and Laura Funderburk; Errica Yvette Poindexter and her husband Frederic Wiggins; and Rana Poindexter Berryman and her husband Quentin Robert Berryman and their children Chloe Yvonne Berryman and Robert James Berryman, as well as a host of dear nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
