James H. Grigsby III

Deacon Emeritus James H. Grigsby III, 94, known to many as "Buddy", was the fourth child born to James H. and Rachel T. Grigsby in his family's NW DC home. At age six he was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in DC and served in many capacities there until he was called from labor to reward on March 11, 2023. A High School Graduate of Dunbar's class of 1946, Miner Teachers College in 1951 (B.S.) and Columbia University in New York in 1959 (M.A.). He served in the US Navy from 1950-1954 aboard a landing-transporter ship during the Korean War. Buddy taught in the DC Public School system for 32 years, retiring in 1985. He was blessed to enjoy a long and fruitful life; remaining a proud and active KAPPA, NAACP, and ASALH member, participating in Banneker and Energetics dance group competitions, tailoring with his neighborhood class, swimming at Takoma's public pool and world-wide travel.
