Gracie Mitchell Obituary

Gracie Earnestine Wyatt Mitchell, 84, of Washington D.C., peacefully passed away on June 2, 2021, at the Sibley Memorial Hospital.

Gracie, (called by all, “Earnestine”) a sixty-year resident of Washington D.C., was born in Montpelier, Virginia, to Brite Norman Wyatt and Anna Mallory Wyatt Johnson on December 23, 1936, the second eldest of six children. She was baptized at Bethany Baptist Church, where she worshiped during her early years. Once Earnestine graduated from high school, she moved to the Washington, D.C. area, with hopes of continuing her education. With determination and drive, she enrolled and graduated from Cortez Peters Business College.  Earnestine continued her education gaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of the District of Columbia.

While pursuing her education, Earnestine met the love of her life Charles T. Mitchell, Sr., who she later married, and had three children, Charles Thomas Mitchell Jr., Carla Teresa Mitchell, and Cynthia Tia Mitchell (all with the initials CTM after their father). During this union, Earnestine and Charles decided to join Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, where they both were notably involved in the church community.

Earnestine worked as an administrator in variable positions as a federal service employee for over forty years, finally retiring as a Contract Specialist, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in every position she held.

Earnestine is survived by her three children, Charles T. Mitchell Jr., Carla Mitchell, and Cynthia Mitchell; three sisters, Alfleda Jenifer, Ada Mallory, and Jerleen Russell; and two grandsons, Joshua Winslow and Successful Mitchell; twenty-three nieces and nephews, and a host of great nieces and nephews. In death, she now joins one brother, Norman Wyatt, and one deceased sister, Ann Alexander.
