Elinor Felton Eugene, 101, passed away at home in Washington, DC. Elinor was born in Washington, DC on July 18, 1919. She attended DC Public Schools and graduated in the famous 1936 class of Dunbar High School. After graduating, in 1940, from Miner Teachers College, with a B.A. degree in English, she earned a Master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Elinor taught in the DC public schools including Spingarn High School where she taught English and French. In 1955 she was recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to France for American teachers of French.
Elinor was married to Jonathan L. Eugene for 31 years. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for 83 years. She had a keen interest in travel and went on international trips with her family and friends. After retirement from the public schools, Elinor taught English part-time at Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia and volunteered for many years for the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics in Precinct 63. She was a longtime member of Takoma Park Baptist Church.
Elinor is survived by her children, Carla and Carlton Eugene and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and friends.
