Edward Smith, M.D. Obituary

Dr. Edward Nathaniel Smith, Jr., known as “Nat” to friends and family, peacefully passed away on April 4, 2026, at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was 70 years old.

Born on July 28, 1955 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, the only son of Edward Nathaniel Smith, Sr. and Georgia Long Smith. Nat showed an early interest in academics and athletics, excelling in the sciences and tennis.  He played on the tennis team throughout the four years he attended Morehouse College, majoring in Chemistry/Pre-Medicine.

After graduating Morehouse, Magna Cum Laude, and as a member of the Psi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., he attended Howard University School of Medicine, which led to an internship at the renowned Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he met his future wife, Mona LaMothe Smith.

After marriage, the two relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland where Nat continued his successful career in radiology while raising their two children. He was an avid fisherman and culinary explorer who was always excited about learning new dishes and cuisines.  Nat was a lover of jazz, going to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year since his first time going in 1981, staying with his in-laws every year.  He considered that to be his special time with them, while trying his culinary ideas on them.  As much as he loved jazz, he never missed Earth, Wind & Fire when they were in concert within a 50-mile radius of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Nat was survived, a mere nine days, by his wife Mona LaMothe Smith; children Edward Nathaniel Smith, III “Trey”, Arianne LaMothe Smith and son-in-law David Almarza Diaz; sister Gail Patrice Smith; mother and father-in-law Gwendolyn Mitchell LaMothe Smith and Armand Olivier, Sr., sisters-in-law Shelly LaMothe Smith and Erin Claire Smith;

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Nathaniel Smith, Sr. and Georgia Long Smith and father-in-law Leroy Vincent LaMothe.

The Mass will be live streamed at Facebook.com/StAndrewByTheBay/videos
