On Friday, January 30, 2026, our beloved Doris Mae (Mobley) Peterson entered eternal rest with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Doris was born on January 23, 1936, in Columbia, South Carolina, to Willie and Beatrice Mobley. She was the second oldest of six children, which included Ralph (Bo), Willa Mae (Jackie), Henry, William (Bobby), and Patrick. All her siblings preceded Doris to glory. Doris and her family moved to Washington DC when she was three years old.

Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at an early age. She later joined Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for many years. Doris enjoyed attending Bible Institute classes with her daughters.

Doris graduated from Eastern High School in the 1950s, with Doris and her sister Jackie being a part of the class to desegregate the school.

Doris united in marriage with the love of her life, Sherman Gordon Peterson. Four children were born from this union: Gordon, Darlene, Theresa, and Felicia. They were married for 31 years until the Lord called Sherman home to glory in 1992.

Doris was employed with the Hecht Company for 19 years in retail. After Doris retired in 1996, she began caring for her grandchildren during the day for many years. Doris enjoyed spending time with her family, including attending her grandchildren’s events, family birthday parties, organizing, and cooking her family’s favorite dishes and desserts, such as tuna macaroni salad, salmon cakes, sweet potato pie, and banana pudding.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory her four children: Gordon (Amanda), Darlene (Alvin), Theresa (Andre), and Felicia (Jerry). Her six grandchildren: Darrell (Tengwera), Kaitlyn (Travis), Jordan, Kiara, Joelle, and Jonathan and her beloved great-granddaughter Zhara; three sisters-in-law, Gloria, Ellen (Howard) and Sharon; and two brothers-in-law, James and Joe. She leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, special neighbors, and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.
