Annie Maude Shelton, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2021. The first child of the late Maceo Banner and Julia Roberts, she was born in Winston-Salem, NC on November 26, 1932. Her father worked at R.J. Reynolds and later ran a community grocery store with his brother, Charlie Banner. Her mother worked at Moravian Music Foundation alongside her sister, Catherine R. Kroger.
Mrs. Shelton grew up in the church at St. James A.M.E. Church in Winston-Salem, NC. In 1950, she attended Palmer Memorial Institute, a school for upper class African Americans in Sedalia, NC. She also attended Vermont Junior College in Montpelier, VT and returned to NC to complete her last two years at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC, a private historically black liberal arts college for women. She obtained her Master's Degree in Social Studies from Case Western Reserve University and became a social worker at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Cleveland, OH. She retired in 1986 as Chief of Social Services at DC Village, a health care and nursing facility in Washington, DC.
Mrs. Shelton loved to travel, especially on cruises. She traveled throughout the United States, the Caribbean and Europe. Jazz was her favorite style of music.
She is survived by her son, Keith R. Shelton of Silver Spring, MD; half-sister, Katherine H. Scott of Winston-Salem, NC; niece, Ericsson Lash of Bethania, NC and a host of other relatives and friends.
