Sylvester Slater, Jr. Obituary

Sylvester Slater Jr. was born on February 2, 1938, in the city of Norfolk VA. Born to Sylvester Slater and Mary Jane Alford-Slater, he was one of four siblings, including his sister Dorothy May Slater Armstrong (deceased) and his sister La Rose Miller (deceased). He is survived by his sister Gardenia Slater.

Sylvester's legacy is carried on by his cherished children, Sabrina K. Slater and Derek B. Slater, who were his pride and joy. He also leaves behind a legacy of love in his Grandchildren: Raquel Brown, Tenishi Shelton, Chelsey Shelton, Navin C. Slater-Ranjit, Kahlil Slater, Rhesia Pittman, Dia Dobson, Alex Owens, Devion Owens. Great-grandchildren: Jovanni Speed, Jeremiah Speed, Solana West “

Later in life, he married Claudette Owens-Slater who had three kids. He embraced them as his own: Living Douglas Owens, Kim Dobson (deceased) Dino Dobson (deceased),     

Sylvester found solace and community at Saint James AME Church in Norfolk, VA, where he was a devoted member.

At just 14 years old, Sylvester demonstrated remarkable courage and commitment by enlisting in the Army, setting the stage for a lifetime of honorable service.

Sylvester's legacy of love, compassion, and service will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. May he find eternal peace, knowing that his memory will forever be cherished.

He leaves a host of nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones. We will all miss your telling it like it was, and your joyous senses of humor, that became your halo and strength.
