LaSandra Hannibal Obituary

LaSandra, "Sandi" Hannibal, passed away January 29, 2024 at her home in Washington, DC, surrounded by her loving family and the prayers of countless friends and colleagues. Sandi's essence was one of fierce kindness and compassion. Her sharp intellect shone through her elegant demeanor, accompanied by her infectious smile.

Sandi was born in Denison, Texas but grew up in Washington, DC with her mother, Lilly, a chemist and her younger sister, Wilhelmina. She followed in her mother's footsteps and enrolled at Fisk University where she received a BA in Childhood Education. She received her Masters in Reading and Language Arts from the University of Southern Connecticut. A life-long educator, Sandi's career spanned over five decades. She taught in both public and independent schools in New England and the DC area. She was a beloved and much respected classroom teacher, school librarian and administrator. During her years at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts she taught kindergarten, first and second grade. She was also part of the admissions team.

When Sandi moved with her family to Washington, DC her love of children's literature led her to Norwood School in Bethesda, MD, where she became lower school librarian. Cultural diversity and the dignity of each child was always an important part of the educational experience wherever she taught. As Assistant Director of Multicultural and Ethical Education at Norwood School she was able to help further the school's commitment to educating the whole child. Sandi served on the Board of Trustees of The Epiphany School, Boston, MA, Belmont Day School in Belmont, MA and Tenacre Country Day School in Wellesley, MA. In retirement Sandi was asked to take on the role of Project Coordinator for Diversity Initiatives at the National Association of Episcopal Schools.

Sandi was associated with the Bishop Walker School from its inception. She served on the founding Governing Board, the Advisory Committee and the Education Committee. Sandi was a regular volunteer at BWS, tutoring boys who needed a little extra TLC. She was also a professional storyteller who performed in museums, and educational institutions around the country. Helping in the BWS library gave her a chance to share her love of children's literature and occasionally share her story telling skills with students.

Sandi is survived by her husband of 47 years, Preston; three adult children, Anika, Matt and Alexandra; her son-in-law Brian; daughter-in-law Betsy; three grandchildren Maddy, Zeke and Wyatt as well as her sister Wilhelmina and a host of loving family and friends.
