John Boyd, Jr., D.D.S. Obituary

“Uncle Jack”, “Daddy Jack”

John Benjamin Boyd, Jr was born at home in Washington DC on December 18, 1931, to John Benjamin Boyd Sr and Mary Vaughn (nee Todd) Boyd.

He was a native Washingtonian who attended the original Dunbar High School graduating in 1949; he attended Lincoln University 1949-1953 where he played football as a center and pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in the early 50’s.  He attended Howard University College of Dentistry from 1953-1957, then to the Indiana School of Dentistry where he received his Master of Science in Dentistry Prosthodontic program (1957-1959), finishing the 2-year program in 1 ½ years.  Finally, he served in the United States Air Force Reserves medical corps as a dentist.  His duty station was Bolling AFB in Washington DC.

Jack and Norma met in high school.  He married the love of his life, after the start of their life together in Indiana, they settled back in Washington DC continuing to raise and expand  their family.  Jack worked for Group Health Association first, established and opened his partner practice in Silver Spring, Maryland while remaining in Washington for 30 years.  He joined the staff at Howard in the early 1970's where he rose to serve as Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs until his retirement in 1991.  While on staff, he created a new clinical program taught in the clinics that was replicated across the country.  This clinical program made learning and teaching consistently delivered to students promoting a continuity of care in serving patients.

From Washington, DC they moved and settled in Annapolis, and in 1988 established Boyd and Boyd Dentistry with his son and daughter-in-law.  He became active in the local Highland Beach community where he and his wife Norma served the community in a variety of ways.  Jack served on the Highland Beach Board of Commissioners, the Beach Erosion and Maintenance Committee and the Board of Directors of the Frederick Douglass Museum and Cultural Center.  Together they hosted many United States Naval Academy graduates providing a home away from home for all midshipmen.  They became surrogate parents and enjoyed being invited to commissioning ceremonies, weddings, and graduation ceremonies.

He was a poker player, an avid fisherman loving to fish around the Bay.  He caught a huge Pike on a trip to Canada with his son Jack.  He was a Lionel train collector. A  voracious reader, who was particularly fond of James Baldwin novels, and political books.   At any time, you would find him reading two books at a time, keeping up with both and conversing robustly on what he absorbed.   He enjoyed all things outdoors including grilling on both his green egg and gas grills, walking Max the dog early in the morning while getting the paper, and driving his golf cart around the neighborhood and the beach.  He loved being on the patio when the weather allowed, enjoying a Rye or Bourbon cocktail along with a good novel in the evening.

Jack was the beloved husband of 64 years of the late Norma T. Boyd;  father of John B. “Jack” Boyd III (Linda), Anthony “Tony” Boyd, D.D.S. (Cynthia), Theresa M. “Terry” Boyd, M.D.  Devoted grandfather of Juanita (Shaka), Chrissy, Ashley (Sean), Ryan and Keven.  Cherished great-grandfather of Christopher, William, Ava, Aidan, Sean Anthony, Logan, and Benjamin.    He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, adopted sons and daughters, cousins, and friends.   He was also predeceased by his father, mother, Toby the cat, and Tanner the dog.
