We mourn the loss of our beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend.
INDIRA MALA COLBERT, 22 passed away unexpectedly on the morning of Thursday, March 7, 2024. INDIRA was born on February 14, 2002, in Washington, DC to the parents of Machah and V’onica Colbert. SHE is the baby sister of Casscius, Robia, and Shanti Colbert.
INDIRA immediately became the focal point with HER cute high cheekbones and bright smile. The Grandfather, Navarro Bharat had the honor of naming HER (INDIRA MALA) a hindi meaning, “Beauty & Strong” (INDIRA), “Peace” (MALA).
INDIRA was surrounded with love by family and friends her whole life. Making friends seemed so instantaneous and easy - HER gentle nature always attracted everyone’s attention. HER main passion was caring for animals. At an early age, INDIRA decided SHE would become a Veterinarian. SHE had pet fish, guinea pigs, foster cared gerbils for Rock Creek Park Nature Center and cared deeply for her Shanti’s dog, Sujii. In addition, SHE loved to travel, visiting many states; most memorable ventures were to Atlanta (daddy-daughter trip), Texas (with friends), Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Hawai’i.
INDIRA began HER education at Murch Elementary School, then Deal Middle School moving on to graduating from Wilson High School in 2020. HER college education started at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, then returned closer to home at Montgomery College (Takoma Park campus) to study Radiology. While in school, SHE was very active; taking part in sports (football/soccer), the orchestras (Cello – both the DC Youth Orchestra Program and Wilson HS) and, was involved in many other activities. INDIRA’s world was just beginning to blossom; taking the first steps in college towards a career.
A Brother’s Memory: SHE would always have a cheerful smile when SHE greeted me when coming in the house. I would always walk in HER bedroom and ask HER about HER aspirations and passions. SHE would always giggle and say l can see you running with a big dog. SHE just had a big heart for animals. SHE was so mindful SHE would always ask how Papa was doing and always ended with “Aww ok… well send Papa my love.”
I love INDIRA so much! SHE was the highlight in our lives. May HER gentleness spread throughout family relationships.
Robia’s Reflection: As the older sister, I always felt a responsibility to care for my sisters in a way that was similar to a second mom. I cared about the little things and even worried about the little-big things. But overall, I’m glad to know they were soaking up the world and living life to its fullest in their own way. My Dad always said, “the world is your domain” and wherever you are MY baby dee-dee you are rested in my heart wherever I go. Shanti & Indi will always be my baby sisters and the care will never stop, our sibling love is everlasting, until we meet again baby girl.
Always remember INDIRA for HER strength, HER enormous heart and gentle spirit
