Easton Crutchfield Obituary

Easton Carlos Crutchfield, affectionately known as “Scopie,” was born on June 3, 1955, in Bethesda, Maryland, to Frances Mason and Clarence Crutchfield.  Scopie transitioned from this life on March 14, 2024, surrounded by family.

The family moved to Washington, D.C., when Scopie was 4 years old and he attended D.C. public schools.  In his youth, he was baptized at the Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, in Washington, D.C., where his grandparents, James and Gertrude Mason, were founding members

As a Nursing Assistant, Scopie spent his career years providing care to others at various nursing and assisted living facilities.  As a member of New Bethel Church of God and Christ in Washington, D.C., he was very active in the Men’s Ministry including the choir.  He supported the outreach ministry and the church-wide Nurses Unit, and served as trainer and coordinator of youth nurses.

Scopie loved the Lord and was an ordained Elder of the Bible Way Church in Washington, D.C.  He was quick to tell you that he was “blessed and highly favored” or “I’m blessed by the best.”  His favorite scripture was Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Scopie was married to Bridgett Carston (now deceased).  No children were born to this union.  While he had no children of his own, he was the proud uncle of lots of nieces and nephews, and they all loved him.

Scopie was an eye-catching dresser and wore his clothes, hats and jewelry well; and his shoes always matched his outfits.  He also loved African attire.  Scopie had an exuberant personality and when he entered the room his presence was known.  He also loved to eat -- especially “soul” and Caribbean food.  He loved his family and friends and spending time at family gatherings.  He was sure to call someone in his family on a daily basis to find out what they were doing.  He also spent a lot of time on the phone with his friends.  He had a loving heart, but he could not keep a secret!

Scopie resided in a nursing facility and had the Washington Post delivered so he could check the obituaries for anyone he knew, and then call everybody else to tell them.  Scopie also had a wonderful tenor voice and was known to sing at church and various events.  He was also interested in the martial arts and held a Black Belt in Taekwondo.

In addition to his biological parents, Scopie was blessed with bonus parents – James and Doris Hopkins, who treated and provided for him as their own.

Scopie leaves to cherish his memory his eight siblings, Patricia Moore, Equilla Allen (Barry), Jack Crutchfield, Sr. (Kay) Ricky Crutchfield (Pennie) Donna Wilson (Chris), Sheena Ferrell, Cavel Singleton (David), and Roydean Crutchfield; two adopted brothers, Derrick Lampkins and Gordon “Chip” Renfrow (LaToya); three aunts; Patricia Crutchfield, Claudia Reddix, Laura Mae Green (Michael) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a special friend, Jackie Bridges, and many other friends.

All of his parents preceded him in death.
