As heaven's gates opened, Myrtle Joiner Lawson, 76, was ushered in by the King. On that day, her parents, three brothers, and six sisters, who predeceased her, welcomed her in for a grand family reunion.
She was a retired D.C. Public Schools educator.
Myrtle leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 53 years, Eugene; two children, Erik Eugene and Maria Denise; three grandchildren, Ariya, Amani, and Aaron; a twin sister, Mary Belton; four nephews; three nieces; many great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

My Dear Friends, I extend my heartfelt sympathies at the passing of my childhood friend and sister in Christ. As an early Canaanite and Washingtonian, I have known Myrtle most of my life. She was smart, caring and passionate about education for our children and youth in the city and in her beloved Canaan Baptist Church. My family's support of the M.Cecil Mills Scholarship Fund is a direct result of Myrtle's advocacy. I will cherish my memories our times together and my vision of her at the desk in the Secretary's Office creating the cutouts and projects for the bulletin board. To me, she was the engine of many good things at Canaan Baptist Church. May she rest in everlasting peace with the ancestors.
