I am really shocked at the loss of a good friend. I knew his Dad. We were Continental pilots, Air Guard officers and personal friends. We had dinner together in Houston many times and thought we had solved most of the world's problems. My heart goes out to his family. He was one of the best.
What a loss.

Ms. James, I was the S2 on MACV Team 32 in Vietnam. Danny flew me on a lot of missions. He saved my life and he was one of my heroes. I've mailed a short letter to you c/o McGuire. I hope you get it. May the Lord shower his blessings on you and your family, you just lost a really good man.

TO THE FAMILY:

The recent passing of Lt. Gen. Daniel James, III causes a deep sadness in those of us who were also fortunate enough to know his Dad, General Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr. It was my great privilege to serve under the father during my first fighter assignment at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ fifty-two years ago. Daniel III was then a college student already showing the pedigree greatness of his father. Later, I was blessed to know Danny, as we called him, throughout our service time together.

America and the world have been blessed to be greatly served by the first and only USAF African American father-son general officer team of the James.’ Knowing both of them and having met other members of their family brought great joy and enriched my life. I can’t help but imagine the spiritual reunion in heaven when the father, mother, daughter, and son gathered around to hear God, our Creator proclaim, “Welcome home, Danny, my true and faithful servant. Well done!”

And I say, rest in peace my brother. May all of those who have joined the “Lonely Eagles” rest in peace until that great getting up morning, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!
