A Fond Goodbye

Sam Newman and I met as elementary school children having big fun roller skating up and down Lamont Street in northwest Washington. Sam was such a friendly and likable kid, so easy to get along with. Because Sam was such a husky fella, not one of the local bullies would mess with him, so he became our block protector. To this day, I don't know if Sam ever knew that.

As the years drifted along, I'd often think back to that hot summer day, just weeks before we were to enroll in Roosevelt High School, when Sam told me he was going to try out for the school's football team. Of course Sam made the team, and made it with flying colors. That's how far back Sam and I go.

As adults, Sam Newman made it his personal business to keep the "ole school gang" together. On many, many occasions, Sam would plan get togethers or happy hours and the like, just so his school buddies could gather to renew or reinvigorate past friendships. My wife Cheryl and I went to a few of those gatherings. And if by fate any member of the ole gang passed on to Providence, the rest of us could be absolutely certain that Sam would let us know, signed with his signature statement : "My man, may he Rest In Peace."

And so, I'll miss you much, my friend. I'm sure your journey into The Great Beyond was a smooth and gentle ride. I admit I've shed a tear or two since I learned that you were gone. But I assure you that, once I put my mind at rest, my thoughts of our friendship will be as dear and gleeful as those carefree days we shared on Lamont Street.

Farewell my friend, may you Rest In Peace.

Sam was my friend and schoolmate. I offer my condolances to the family and friends of the man who lived his life with such elan and conviction of character. We had a lot of fun together. I will always remember him and will miss him. God bless him and he will rest in peace. Amen.

Sorry to hearing about the passing of my good friend Sam who I had known since the 60's at Howard. Once hearing this sad news, I passed it on to others who knew him as well. Everyone had virtually the same response, "Sorry to hear the sad news, Sam was a wonderful guy."
